As the 2009 winner of the GTA Partnership Award, this program is being recognised for its collaborative approach where shared resources and close cooperation amongst partners ensures a seamless service to both students and employers. </span></p><p><span>The partnership began in 1997 with a pilot Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) program to diversify the pathways offered to senior school students. The aim of the program is to increase </span></p><p><span>retention of students until successful completion of their senior secondary certificate and to provide a vocational pathway into the full-time workforce when students exit.</span></p><p><span>One of the great strengths of the program is the co-ordinated approach by the seven schools. Employing an executive officer enables them to provide a streamlined program to their students across </span></p><p><span>all the schools. The program is unique in that several of the schools in the cluster release students to be in the workplace for three days per week.</span></p><p><span>The role of the Group Training Organisation (MEGT) is to source employment for the ASbAs and provide monitoring and support throughout their qualification. MEGT and the vetEAST executive </span></p><p><span>officer operate as one unit. Together they manage student recruitment, orientation, the development of job seeking skills and securing employment. Once employed, the trainees are visited every </span></p><p><span>six weeks at work and twice a term at their RTO by both the vetEAST officer and the MEGT Field Officer. They also receive weekly school visits from the vetEAST officer.<span>  </span>This level of monitoring </span></p><p><span>enables the development of close relationships with the students and the ability to identify and address concerns at a very early stage. Naomi Jeffs is a horticulturalist, and shows us around the gardens at Vaucluse House and explains the various aspects of a historical garden. </p><p>Naomi walks us through the Vaucluse House ‘Kitchen Garden’. A kitchen garden is the historical term given to a designated area within the estate that is dedicated to food production. </p><p>The kitchen garden at Vaucluse House contains a number of rare and period plants, historical fruits and vegetable and ‘period produce’. It was planted in 2000 and has been Naomi’s pet project since her time there. </p><p><strong>About Naomi:</strong></p><p>Naomi completed a trade certificate in Horticulture at TAFE in 2000 and has been with Vaucluse House for eight years. She had been working with a contractor who had some work at Vaucluse House when she heard about a full time gardener’s position that was available at the property. She applied and was offered the job. </p><p>She loves her job and has learned a great deal about historical plants and planting techniques that become more rare by the day. As such, a job with a company like the HHT has opened her up to more than standard horticulture. </p><p>She spends most of her time at Vaucluse House but works at other houses as well. Since being appointed Acting Head Gardener, her role has developed to include some of the research and education aspects of the HHT. </p><p>As such, she currently gives tours of the property, explaining the various aspects of the garden to visitors. It’s something she’s really enjoyed doing. </p><p>Her dream is to work with the National Trust in England, (or Tasmania and Victoria if she’s unable to move overseas). She considers herself fortunate to have such specialist knowledge in Victorian Kitchen Gardens and to have such a newfound appreciation for history.</p><p><strong>About the Historic Houses Trust:</strong></p><p>The Historic Houses Trust is a statutory authority within the Department of Arts Sports and Recreation. It is one of the largest state museums in Australia and is entrusted with the care of key historic buildings and sites in New South Wales. </p><p>One of their sites is Vaucluse House, which survives as one of Sydney's only 19th century harbourside estates with house, kitchen wing, stables and outbuildings and is still surrounded by ten hectares of formal gardens and grounds. </p><p>Built in 1803, Vaucluse House was once owned by William Charles Wentworth, 'father' of the first Constitution for New South Wales, his wife Sarah and their immediate family of 10 children who lived in the house from 1827–1853 and again in 1861–1862. </p><p>This gothic style mansion includes both lavish entertaining rooms and functional 'downstairs' areas. Vaucluse House paints a picture of the social aspirations and lifestyles of the Wentworths and of the servants, both convict and free, who lived and worked there. </p><p>The interiors include original Wentworth pieces together with furniture, furnishings and collections of the early to mid 19th century. We chat to Cameron McGlinchey, who has played the drums since he was 7 years of age and now is on the judging panel for the drumming section of the competition. Also a judge is the infamous Dicko (Ian Dickson) from Australian Idol!<br /><br />One of the comp winners - Richard Bloomfield - is a student and songwriter from Bega High School. Richard, coming from a musical family - with his Mum being a classical pianist, and his Dad a singer - has been performing since he was 9 years old. <br /><br />He entered the competition on the closing day, putting three songs in, and was surprised at the song which they picked - called 'Miss Horizon', which is about looking for love. When he first started song writing, it took Richard a couple of years to pluck up the courage to perform as he found it hard to bare his soul, but now he is overcoming that. He appreciates music's ability to convey emotions and feelings, and make the audience feel something too. SkillsOne captured Richard playing his song with his guitar - amidst the shocking Bega flies and heat! <br /><br />Richard won $400 for his school and $600 of musical equipment for himself. He intends to get parts for his old guitar and restore it. In the immediate future, Richard is releasing a song with his band who are due to tour in January. Matt Jenkin chats to Eric Sandberg, Course Coodinator, from Victoria University.</p><p>We look around at the facilities and what the students learn in the boat building courses.</p><p>The Certificate III and Certificate II in Engineering - Production (Boatbuilding Pre-Apprenticeship) provides boatbuilders and shipwrights apprentices with training in the construction and repair of all types of vessels from small pleasure craft and work boats, to large commercial and naval ships.</p><p>The course is looking for young apprentices who are working in the boating industry and older life changers who may or may not have a trade already. The course aims to expose students to a bit of everything from fibre glass boat building to timber boat building.</p><p> The course covers aluminium and metal fabrication in theory but for ship building and much larger boat construction a tradesperson would have to do boiler making, welding and metal fabrication separately. Being riders and working out what riders want is vital to track building. Brett has been a rider. He counts lights, studies the energy draw of electrical equipment such as fridge, air-conditioners and computers. He then looks at when the energy is being used. </p><p>During this data collection, Lee can start to see the ‘energy balance’, a breakdown of what is using the electricity and when. Lee makes a correlation between the data and the company’s energy bill so that the energy consumption can be given a dollar figure. </p><p>When dealing with companies and small businesses, it is best to outline the financial benefits of energy saving to them in order to have the best outcome for the environment. He worked in kitchens as a head chef for many years, but got tired of the demands of the hospitality industry so decided to seek a new career. </p><p>The apprenticeship is four years and the first year is spent mainly at Whyalla Tafe, which is set up like a factory for apprentices. Peter is paid a wage and guaranteed a job in the Onesteel operation during and after completion of his electrical qualifications. </p><p> In Whyalla, Onesteel operate an open cut mine for iron ore, hematite and magnetite, all materials that go into steel production. There is much to do for electricians on site, from maintaining motors and pumps and mainly controlling the isolation of electrical supply during routine shut downs of certain areas and machinery. Making sure supply is dead so workers can disconnect motors and pumps is a very important aspect of an electrician’s job on the mine site. </p><p> Peter and completed a 20 week job training program on hand tools, power tools, maths and computation and interpreting drawing plans. Peter has done very well because he has good job motivation, problem solving skills and work ethic which he puts down to his age and experience with getting things done. </p><p>He struggled a bit with some of the maths and electrical physics because it was so long ago that he did equations back in Year 11! But he found that with internet research and dedication to his assignments he brought himself up to speed quite easily. </p><p>Some of his colleagues are quite young and their attitudes are very different to Peter’s but he is finding more and more that his work experience and his dedication to the course is proving to be a very successful way of navigating his new career path. </p><p> Next year Peter will be working on the mine site full-time, whilst accruing the hours necessary to fulfil his electrical apprentice requirements. Brian Heim was announced as the winner. </p><p>Lucy Nash chats to Brian Heim who shares what it's like being an Agricultural teacher in Australia and what it's like winning the Trade Teacher Award. </p><p><span class="textBodyCharcoal"><font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">Brian has worked as a VET program manager and lecturer in pastoral and animal studies for five years. Prior to that he was the director of a veterinary nursing program in Texas for six years, after having spent six years in private practice. </font></span></p><p><span class="textBodyCharcoal"><font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">In Texas he led the development and implementation of the largest and most successful distance learning program for vet nurses.
