What's My Trade?

After successfully launching the school based apprenticeship concept over 12 years ago, GAGAL has another first.  What's My Trade?  This takes Try A Trade one step further.  What's My Trade? focuses on predominantly primary school children.  Recently over 2000 young people visited What's My Trade? from all over Central Queensland, some from over 200klms away.

What's My Trade? is totally hands on with no paper, no lollies and no promotional giveaways.  The only thing the young people take away with them is what they themselves have made.  Trades to experience included bricklaying, carpentry, painting, tiling, floor laying, plumbing, fitting and turning, welding, electrical, automotive mechanics, horticulture, warehousing, retail, hospitality and hair and beauty. (photos of what they made)

What's My Trade? has been carefully crafted to appeal to a younger cohort and it is all about them having fun "having a go".

"The days of Grandad's shed at the bottom of the yard are long gone" say GAGAL General Manager, Kerry Whitaker, "young people are not exposed to getting their hands dirty and constructing something and this is their opportunity".

Children as young as 2 had fun with their parents on the open day.

Kerry says "If this experience has inspired primary aged children to consider a career in the trades GAGAL has gone some way to achieving its aim.  If making a decision on a future career direction prevents a young person from disengaging from school, we have succeeded beyond our wildest expectations"

GAGAL is very fortunate to have generous sponsors and supports who give of their own time to ensure that this event is both professional and, more importantly, safe.  GAGAL would like to thank them as well as the hard working GAGAL staff and the GAGAL apprentices who gave freely of their time, energy and enthusiasm.  Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
